To qualify for Social Security benefits, the deceased must have worked in jobs covered by Social Security, with work credits ranging from 1 1/2 to 10 years, depending on their age at the time of death.
Who may receive monthly benefits:

A one-time payment of $255 is provided in addition to monthly benefits. The payment is made in the following order of priority:
Surviving spouse who lived with the deceased at the time of death.
Surviving spouse is eligible for benefits in the month of death.
Eligible children of the deceased.
