Peggy Jeanne Zurfluh was born Dec. 18, 1927, to John and Caroline Deering in Tacoma, Washington, and passed away peacefully Oct. 31, 2023. She was raised in Midland, Washington. She loved her many farm animals (especially her horse, Lucky), was involved in Girl Scouts (where she remembered selling cookies for $.25 cents/box) and 4-H club. On Saturdays, she would attend Spanaway Auction where her mother ran the soup kitchen. There at age 7, she met a new friend named Phil, her future husband. After graduating from Lincoln H.S. and Phil’s return from the war, they married and raised three boys: Dick, John, and Danny.
Peggy and Phil owned and operated Spanaway Auction, later Spanaway Furniture. From an early age, she’d dreamed of becoming a nurse, so when her boys reached Jr. Hi. age, she enrolled in and graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing as an RN. She went on to become a Nurse Practitioner with the Pierce County Health Dept. and was awarded Pierce County Nurse of the Year.
After retirement, Peggy and Phil moved to their little farm in Eatonville where she once again surrounded herself with farm animals. Peggy loved her family most of all. She arranged for her father, husband, children, and grandchildren to travel to Europe, and her annual family gathering for Christmas was legendary.
Peggy is survived by sons John (Linda), Danny (Judy), daughter-in-law Gayle, Grandchildren Tom (Nicole), Lance, Heidi, Laurie, Katy, Amy, Betsy, 13 great-grandchildren, brothers-in-law John W. (Linda) and Chris Zurfluh. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Phil, and son Dick.
The family would like to thank the staff at Tacoma Lutheran Home (Elisio) for their excellent end-of-life care.
Please join the family for a celebration of Peggy’s long, wonderful life at Bethany Lutheran Church, Eatonville, Dec. 9th at 1P.M.
