Makaiwa Bond Obituary

Makaiwa Leilani completed her journey to Heaven on April 11, 2020 at age 64. Born in Honolulu, HI.  She was a generous and passionate woman who loved cooking and collecting driftwood by the water.  Makaiwa enjoyed watching commercials and Jeopardy!  She always sang to Tracy Chapman, Will Downing, Chaka Khan, Toni Braxton and Teena Marie.  Even as she was transitioning she was singing Mahalia Jackson’s "Troubles Of This World"!  She loved reading and learning which led her to earn a Bachelors Degree in Psychology.  Makaiwa Leilani had many great qualities that she passed onto her three loving daughters.  Her love for education flowed through Karla “with a K” (Rob) Prince-Cheng of San Jose,CA.  Her ability to work a room was inherited by her namesake Leilani Makaiwa Bond of Winchester, VA.  Her vivacious spirit transitioned to Hypaecia (Tony) Chase of Hammond, IN. 

Makaiwa leaves to cherish her memories the foundation of the family her wonderful mother Willie Ester Young; beautiful sisters Diana Young, Debbie Young, Katrena Young and Kimberley(Bud) Breed all of Tacoma, WA;  brothers; Larry Young of WA; Robert(Cara) Young of OR; four grandchildren Kyle Cheng; Anahi Chase; Alaric Chase; Ahlee Chase; and a host of loving family members. 

Makaiwa Leilani was preceded in death by her father Lawrence Young; son Kunta Kente; grandsons Damari Bond and Isaiah Coleman; brother Kenneth Young; sisters Pam Young and Ava Young. 

A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

In the meantime, the family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to so many family members, dear friends, funeral directors, and wonderful health care providers who faithfully accompanied Makaiwa Leilani through her unexpected Stage Four Colon and Liver Cancer diagnosis and now over into her new life with God.

The family requests that in honor of Makaiwa Leilani Bond you please get a Colonoscopy and stay informed through regular health care visits. 

God’s a healer and he makes all things new!  In February 2020, Makaiwa Leilani accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior!  Praise God, FORGIVE and continue following Christ forward!!
