If racing is a matter of spirit, not strength, Joy Delores Schoolmaster was born for the adventure. Born in Salem, Oregon on July 5, 1936, to M.C. and Ethel Nelson, Joy always called the Pacific Northwest home. Her enduring spirit saw her grow into an independent woman, marry her love Charles P. Schoolmaster on September 17, 1954, carry and care for her three sons, and spread joy (like her name implied) every chance she got. A member of the Tacoma Trail Cruisers, she knew racing was about spirit. Joy loved the thrill of riding quads, driving race cars, and hot rodding. She often went camping with family, attended service at Grace Lutheran Church, and could be found chatting with the women of her quilting circle. Joy was a joy for everyone who knew her. On August 16, 2020, Joy took the final step towards reunion with her beloved sons Timothy and Charles, who both saw the glory of Heaven before her. Her high spirits, tenacity, and zest for life will continue to be cherished by her husband Charles P. Schoolmaster; son Andrew (Teisa) Schoolmaster; her beloved grandchildren Kati Morelles, Amanda Van Derveer, Joey Bonham, Joshua Schoolmaster, Jake Hurley, Katrina Hurley, Chad Schoolmaster, Mandrea Schoolmaster, and Kandice Schoolmaster; along with numerous great grandchildren. She may be on an unseen track, but her race is far from over. Joy will be privately interred beside her son Timothy at Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon.
