Donald Clinton Obituary

Rev. Donald A. Clinton of Gig Harbor, Washington died on August 9, 2019, at the age of 92. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Carter and Ruth Clinton. He enlisted in the Navy at age of 17 and served 2 years until 1945. He attended Wittenberg University and Hamma Divinity School in Springfield, Ohio. After graduating he moved with his wife and young son to the Pacific Northwest where he served Lutheran congregations for nearly 50 years.

He married Audrey Clinton in 1973. Don was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was happiest when surrounded by his family. He especially delighted in family gatherings.

Don lived life as an adventure and brought an indomitable spirit to all that he did. Passionate for his calling, Don worked tirelessly for those living on the fringes. He was mission developer for three thriving Lutheran congregations, served inner city churches, and served interim ministries. A true man of action, Don continued to advocate for hunger, peace and justice causes until the end of his long life.

One didn’t know Don long before learning of his obsession for competitive volleyball. He played at the YMCA until the age of 87, relished playing in national tournaments, and was thrilled to have the honor of playing on the USA team at the World Masters Games in Denmark in 1989. One of his greatest joys in retirement was volunteering at the local elementary school as a reader/storyteller for 17 years. Throughout his life he was an avid hiker who loved exploring the Pacific Northwest mountains and Arizona desserts.

Don is survived by Audrey, his beloved wife of 48 years, his four children: David (Aida), Robert (Becky), Paul (Wendy), and Mary (Pete); nine grandchildren and their families: Tracee, Kelly, Kristen, Peter, Maria, Chris, Andrew, Jenny, and Kelsey; ten great grandchildren, two nephews, a niece, and many dear friends.

Please send remembrances for Don, in lieu of flowers, to ELCA World Hunger, care of Agnus Dei Lutheran Church of Gig Harbor, 10511 Peacock Hill Avenue NW, Gig Harbor, WA 98332.  Don was very passionate about ELCA World Hunger and a donation to further his legacy would be a great blessing.

A memorial service for Don will be held at 1pm on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Agnus Dei Lutheran Church in Gig Harbor.
