Robert Lee Wood

Robert (Woody) Wood of Roy, WA passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on July 20, 2019. He was born in Hazel Park, MI on January 8th, 1947 to Alex and Trudy Wood.  Robert grew up in Hazel Park and joined the Army after he left school. 

Robert was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam.  He met and married Dolores (Dee) Knopes at Ft. Ritchie, MD where they were both stationed.  They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this November.  They had one son, Preston, and a daughter, Holly Ayn, who died at birth.  After leaving the Army, Robert was employed by the Department of Defense at Ft. Lewis.  His first civilian job was as a police officer with the Ft. Lewis Law Enforcement Command.  While in this position he was awarded the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service after witnessing a woman in obvious distress and quickly determined the need for and administered the Heimlich maneuver which saved her life.  He continued as a civil service employee in various facilities management related positions and retired in 2009 with 35 years of service.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Holly Ayn.   He is survived by his wife, Dee, of 49 years; his son, Preston (Julie); two grandchildren, Justin and Nicole Wood; and 2 step grandchildren, Amber and Jarrod Hammond; brothers Mark and Jeff (of Grand Prairie TX); and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was a very involved father and grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family.  He was a favorite uncle to many of his nieces and nephews and is greatly missed by all.

After retiring he continued his avid fishing, enjoyed traveling and sightseeing, bowling and was very proud of his yard and gardens.  Being a transplanted “city boy” from the Detroit area he easily took to Pierce County and loved the country life.
