Julia "Mama Lang" Mendiola Manalo
Kala
The music of the world- the rhythmic zip-zip of tires on blacktop, the crackle of fresh baked bread, and the flutter of tree leaves nourished her. Like the pulsing tones of live music that thrum electric through the body or the pull of heartstrings when the cantor begins a hymn, Julia “Mama Lang” Mendiola Manalo was vibrant and full of life. Sometimes called Lang, she had a heart that danced and delighted at the world’s songs. Born on July 7, 1938 in Agana, Guam, she knew birdsong, the crash of surf on sand, and the coos of love from the beginning. Later, after she married the love of her life Walter Manalo, the laughter of children, whispered sweet nothings, and the sizzle of a pie fresh from the oven constantly filled her ears. Julia spent her days surrounded by family, visiting places close to her heart, putting a little bit of her joyous spirit into everything she baked, and listening to all the sweet music life offered. At the age of 81, on November 29, 2019 Julia went to hear the songs of Heaven and once again sit beside her loving parents Jesus Aquino and Maria Cruz Mendiola; her siblings Juan Mendiola, Jose Mendiola, Lisa Crisostomo, Concepcion Taisague, Isabel Flores; and her precious grandson Joshua Leon Guerrero. Those who remain to continue loving her are her husband Walter P. Manalo; her children Peter Manalo, Danny Manalo, Florence Leon Guerrero (Charles), Julie Laorosa (Efren), Mary Sablan (Donald), and Zina Manalo-Chunfook (Michelle); her brothers Tommy and Antonio Mendiola and their spouses; her sisters Anna Chargualaf, Maria Salas, Evelyn Masculino, Lourdes Roberto, and their spouses; her 14 beautiful grandchildren; and her 24 beloved great-grandchildren. A visitation and reception will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday December 12, 2019 at Weeks’ Dryer Mortuary. A funeral mass to honor Julia will be held starting with a rosary at 11 a.m. on Friday December 13, 2019 at St. John of the Woods Catholic Church.
