Leopoldo “Leo” Ramon Martinez, Sr., 84 of University Place, WA, died on March 22, 2018 after battling illness. Born February 10, 1934 in Laredo, TX to Juan and Isabelle (Soto) Martinez
Leo’s military career started in the Air Force 1951. His assignments took him to several countries and states. He married Margret Agnarsdottir in Iceland. As their family grew, they were stationed in Texas, Oklahoma, Japan, Germany and again Iceland. The family eventually settled in Tacoma, WA, where he retired from McChord AFB as a Sr Master Sergeant. He later worked at Cable Craft for 20 yrs until retiring.
Leo was an avid golfer. He was known to golf almost daily at Whispering Firs or Meadow Park, sporting bright colored shirts and hats for the past 30 years. He completed NY Times crossword in ink every day, and enjoyed being outdoors using his metal detector or fishing. His family has fun memories playing his favorite games together: Yahtzee, cribbage and penny poker. He is loved and will be missed.
Leo was preceded in death by his son Leo Jr., and parents. He is survived by daughters Deborah Ohls (Richard) of Kent, WA, Maggie Lenox (Bill) of University Place, WA, Della Hoskins of Tacoma, WA; son Michael (Melinda) of Tacoma, WA; Ex-Spouse Margret Martinez (married 43yrs) of Tacoma, WA; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held at Weeks’ Dryer Mortuary in Tacoma, WA; Visitation on Wednesday, April 4th from 4-8pm, Funeral Thursday, April 5th 10am with reception to follow, and Military Honors will be rendered prior to burial at Tahoma National Cemetery at 2 pm.
